19MW Solar
Farm – Chester
Cappers delivered essential enabling civil and utility infrastructure works for a 19 MW solar farm in Chester. Working as a key delivery partner on this renewable energy development, our team installed power, communications and support systems designed to ensure long-term operational performance and grid readiness.
Scope of Works
Cable Excavation & Installation
Approximately 5 km of underground cabling installed across the solar farm, including:
• LV (Low Voltage)
• HV (High Voltage)
• EHV (Extra High Voltage)
• Fibre communications and site security network cabling
• Creation of access roads and hard standing storage areas
Substation Civil Works
Construction of multiple substation bases and associated earthworks to support electrical infrastructure and grid interfacing equipment.
Utility Coordination & Protection
Detailed trial excavations and bespoke protection measures around a National Gas high-pressure transmission main, ensuring safe construction of haulage routes and civil works without impacting critical infrastructure.
Challenges & Solutions
Working Around High-Pressure Gas Infrastructure
A significant challenge on this programme was the need to undertake excavation works adjacent to a live National Gas high-pressure transmission main. To mitigate risk and maintain safety compliance across the works:
We executed extensive trial excavations to accurately locate and verify utility depths.
Controlled excavations were performed down to the live gas main to survey exact proximity.
A bespoke protective system was designed and installed over the exposed asset, enabling subsequent construction of both temporary and permanent haul roads safely and efficiently.
This approach ensured the integrity of key national infrastructure was protected throughout the project while maintaining programme continuity.
Outcome & Value Delivered
This project demonstrates Cappers’ capability to deliver complex and large-scale infrastructure works that support renewable energy asset deployment:
Safely installed cabling essential for solar farm power and communications systems.
Delivered robust civil foundations for critical electrical infrastructure.
Successfully negotiated and protected critical national utilities on site, enabling uninterrupted progress of renewable energy construction phases.
The works reinforced Cappers’ strengths in safety, utility coordination, and renewable energy enablement — qualities that underpin successful delivery for solar, wind, and energy infrastructure clients.
